Analytical Tools

The Hatchery Scientific Review Group (HSRG) has developed analytical tools to support application of its principles and recommendations, including the “All H Analyzer” (AHA), a Microsoft Excel-based application that allows managers to explore the implications of alternative ways of balancing management of hatcheries, harvest, and habitat and hydrosystem constraints.

More recently, the In-Season Implementation Tool (ISIT) was developed to help managers make annual decisions about hatchery and harvest management. We have developed ISITs for Okanogan River summer/fall Chinook, eleven Cowlitz Basin Chinook, coho, and steelhead populations, and eighteen Willapa Bay salmon populations (Chinook, coho, and chum).  In 2017, the HSRG developed a generalized version of the AHA-ISIT tool for Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (see WDFW Training – Phase 3, below) that may be adapted to any population.

WDFW Training

WDFW requested that the HSRG provide Staff Training on the use of analytical tools (All-H Analyzer) and the application of HSRG principles. Phase One of the training provided an overview of HSRG principles and took place in January 2015. Phase Two of the training reviewed several examples of hatchery reform and applications of analytical tools and took place in April and May 2015. Phase Three focused on training key individuals in the specific use of analytical tools and took place in July 2017.
